Entry 1:

In the first edition of Fingir, we are focusing on the people whose sacrifice made it possible for us to pursue our education, careers, and interests — our parents. Due to the physical distance created by mass migration, it is now the new generation’s responsibility to learn and engage with the teachings and traditions of our parents, countries, and Central American heritage.

In this edition, we offer the opportunity to clean slate and re-explore the intergenerational discussions centered around our parent’s generation and their experience.

Here are a few key topics to help jumpstart your conversations:

  • Stories and memories from childhood and adolescence.

  • The experience of immigrating to a new country, and the transitional period that followed.

  • Careers or goals that were put on hold due to socio-economic or political circumstances.

  • Generational trauma, and the taboo around this subject.

  • Advice for future generations.

We are looking for submissions related to these topics and to any subsequent conversations sparked by these discussions. Your submissions can include (but are not limited to), photos, videos, poems, short stories, paintings, or any other relevant mediums. The more we receive, the better!

All entries must be submitted to fingirca@gmail.com with attachments saved as, “last name_project title.” If there are multiple attachments, please name them in chronological order, “last name_project title_1.”

Note: We are a self-sustained publication that will grow with more funding. Currently, our submissions are donation based and we cannot compensate artists for their work. However, we can offer a platform to connect and showcase work, as we plan to curate an exhibition alongside our publication release in Summer 2021 (Covid permitting). The submission period will close February 14th, and artists will hear back by March 1st with more detail regarding the next steps required. Until then, as we find our grounding, we are thrilled to be announcing our first call for entries, and even more excited to see all the submitted works.

Thank you for all the support so far and lots of love to everyone who is helping bring this project to life!
